The Triangle Shirtwaist Factory Fire: From Tragedy to Reform
Long-Term Impact
“This is not the first time girls have been burned alive in the city. Every week I must learn of the untimely death of one of my sister workers. Every year thousands of us are maimed. The life of men and women is so cheap and property is so sacred” (Rose Schneiderman, 1911).
The 1913 Binghamton Clothing Factory fire killed 31 workers, and a 1937 Texas school gas explosion killed 298. Tragedies, including these, continued to raise awareness and drove reform efforts, but not without opposition.
